TYAE – Put Tibet Back On The Map
Under Chinese occupation, Tibetan villages, towns and cultural landmarks get destroyed. And their ancient names get replaced with new Chinese names – as an attempt to completely wipe out the Tibetan identity, culture, and language. Exactly 100 years after Tibet’s declaration of independence, we started a project to save Tibet’s cultural heritage in the digital space: We asked Google with a worldwide petition to put Tibet back on the map – by officially adding the traditional Tibetan names written in the Tibetan alphabet. The project found wide support – from the Tibetan diaspora, Hollywood celebrities and web activists like the Anonymous Collective.
